THE EXPERIENCE OF FEMALE PATTERN BALDNESS: WHAT IS IT AND HOW TO TREAT AND CONCEAL IT.
Hair loss is normal, especially as you get older. It’s likely that you won’t make it past the age of 55 without experiencing at least some overall thinning of your hair.
If you are lucky, your hair will only thin out a little and not be noticeable. However, for many women, this is not the case and the dreaded female pattern baldness rears its head.
SO, WHAT IS FEMALE PATTERN BALDNESS?
Otherwise known as androgenetic alopecia, it is hair loss that affects women. Similar to male pattern baldness except it presents in slightly different hair loss patterns in women.
In men, typically hair loss starts at the front and the hairline or temples start to recede towards the back of the head. Combined with hair loss in the crown area, eventually coving the whole head.
In women, generally the hair loss is all over thinning starting at the part line and throughout the top and crown area.
- Type I – small amount of thinning around your hairs natural part, can also include temple recession.
- Type II – widening of the part and thinning around it, can also include temple recession.
- Type III – thinning throughout with visible “see-through” area at the top and back of your scalp.
What causes female pattern baldness?
The most common cause is genetics. If one or both of your parents experienced hair loss, chances are so will you. Female pattern baldness is more common after a woman hits menopause however, women of all ages can be affected. Other things that can contribute to female pattern baldness are hormone imbalance, poor diet, certain medications, underlying medical conditions.
It’s always recommended to consult your doctor if you are experiencing a more than normal amount of hair loss. Your doctor can help rule out known contributors and suggest a treatment plan based on your individual needs.
IS FEMALE PATTERN BALDNESS REVERSIBLE?
The short answer is no, female pattern baldness is not completely reversible. However, be proactive if you think your hair is thinning. The sooner you seek treatment the better your chances are at minimizing further hair loss and possibly growing some of your hair back.
There are many different treatment options depending on the cause and severity of your hair loss. Treatments include Minoxidil, supplements and laser light therapy just to name a few. Typically, these types of treatments may take 6 – 12 months to see results and will need to be ongoing to maintain the positive effects.
